James Mathes, Jr., 56, of Williams River, passed away on October 10, 2023, at his home. He was born on September 10, 1967, the son of James Gale Mathes, Sr. and Dorotha Mae Woods/Hall.

James is survived by his children, Michael (Ashton) Ellison of Upper Glade and Brittany Jones of Bolair; brothers Rex (Cindy) Wright and Joe Wright, both of Cowen; sisters, Sherry (Jeff) Bowman of Birch River, and Phyllis (Merideth) Hoke of Cowen; grandchildren, Kiley, Remington, and Raelea Ellison and Dakota and Aiden Jones; and nieces and nephews, Josh (Atasha) Bowman, Joseph Wright, Kia (Dalton) Davis, Reese Davis, Rosie Wright, Travis, Rachel, Devin and Gavin Hoke, Kayla and John Feagans, and Dakota and Ryan Hoke, and companion Carolyn Hoover. James was preceded in death by his parents.

He enjoyed working on cars, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.

There will be a memorial service at Morris Funeral Home in Cowen at 4:00pm on Friday, October 20, 2023, with chaplain Jim Dyer presiding.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3:00 pm until the time of service.
