Services celebrating the life of Sherlock will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, June 21, 2019 at Morris Funeral Home, Cowen with Pastor Craig Williams and Pastor Ben Stone officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post #62 will follow at the Handschumacher Cemetery, Upper Glade. Friends may call from 11:00 am until time of service Friday at the funeral home.

James Shirley “Sherlock” Holmes, 92 of Cowen passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019 at Summersville Regional Medical Center. He was born September 12, 1926 in Webster County, a son of the late Edward and Clina Sears Holmes.

Sherlock was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the 72nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division (Indian Head), Company B “Crusaders”. His unit was involved in the battle of Heartbreak Ridge in Korea and he was a member of the 1st Armored Division (Old Ironsides)  during World War II. He was a logger and carpenter. He loved Jesus, family, hunting and singing, “Sing On”. He became a born again Christian at the age of 88.

He loved Jesus more than anything and wanted everyone to go to Heaven with him to see the lion lay down with the lamb. He also would remind us “Whatever you believe you can do-you can do.” And remember “When you rest, He works and when He works, you rest.”

Surviving is his daughter, Lora (Bill) Bragg of Cowen, grandchildren, Lance (Sherri) Bragg of Cowen and Amber Markle of Morgantown, great-grandchildren, Patience (Logan) Farley, Asya Squires, Griffin Bragg, Gunnar Bragg, Jade-Marie Bragg, Riley Markle and Remari Markle and many other family and friends.

In addition to his parents, his loving wife Dorothy Giles Holmes, daughter, Terry Markle and brother Arnold Holmes preceded him in death.
