Kyle Ray Bess, 36, formerly of Cowen, entered into rest on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at PIH Health Whittier Hospital, in Whittier, CA. after an extended illness from metastatic melanoma. Kyle was born November 30, 1986, at Summersville Regional Medical Center, the son of Samuel Ray Bess and Patricia Ann McCartney.

Kyle was a free spirit with a huge heart, an old soul and a love for the outdoors. He loved to fish, play his guitar (especially with his brother), and spend time with family and friends. Kyle was diagnosed with terminal melanoma in 2020 and later decided not to seek further treatment but to enjoy his time left by traveling and seeing the world. He originally traveled to Utah and later, on to California.

Left to cherish his memory are his father, Samuel Ray Bess and step-mother Janice Bess of Cowen, mother, Patricia Ann McCartney Flynn and step-father Joe Flynn of Hickory, NC; brother and best friend, Steven Daniel Bess and his companion Gracie of Ellenboro, NC; nephew Bryson, niece, Zoey and nephew Georgie, all who lovingly called him uncle Dude; step-father Darrell Meadows and his step-brother, step-sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Kyle was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, James Ray and Shirley Bess and maternal grandparents, Otis and Alice McCartney.

Kyle’s wishes for cremation have been fulfilled.
