Wuanita Riffle Short, a devoted homemaker and beloved family matriarch, peacefully passed away on May 14, 2026, at United Hospital Center. Born on May 20, 1947, Wuanita’s life was marked by her unwavering dedication to her family and her enjoyment of the simple pleasures found in nature and family gatherings.
Wuanita cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and extended family, often found planting flowers, tending her garden, working puzzles and wordsearch, or enjoying the great outdoors through fishing and camping. Her love for these activities reflected a vibrant spirit and a profound appreciation for life’s quiet beauty.
She is survived by her loving siblings Robert (Irene) Riffle of Volga, Richard Riffle of Webster Springs, Barbara Haddix of Buckhannon, and Mary Rush of Phillippi. Wuanita was a proud and caring mother to Anita (Dwayne) Taylor of Webster Springs and Herbert Short, II of Flatwoods. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Adam Everson, Jewel (Rachel) Short, Latosha (Bryan) Dumire, Brandon Short, and Kayla (Robert) Sims, as well as her great-grandchildren Kelel, Elli, Thea, Owen, Jace, Kaydence, Leland, Jayden, Rinzley, and Noah. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were touched by her warmth and kindness.
Wuanita was predeceased by her parents, John R. Riffle and Lynida Gillis Riffle, husband, Herbert Short, and sister, Hazel Charlton, brother, Eugene Dale Riffle, brothers-in-law Dennis Haddix, Rodney Rush.
Wuanita Riffle Short’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her. Her memory will continue to inspire those who cherished her steadfast love, her generous spirit, and her joy in the company of family and nature. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A visitation will be held on May 21, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Morris Funeral Home, 160 Railroad Avenue, PO Box 267, Cowen, WV 26206. The funeral service will follow immediately at 2:00 PM in the same location, offering family, friends, and community members an opportunity to honor and celebrate Wuanita’s meaningful life. Burial will follow at the Short Family Cemetery, Craigsville.
