Unia Josephine Cobb

Unia Josephine Cobb, lovingly known as Josie, passed away on September 20, 2026, after an extended illness. She was born on December 30, 1941, in Camden on Gauley, and throughout her life she was known as a loving and caring woman who always had a smile on her face.

Josie was a graduate of Cowen High School and went on to devote 22 years of service to Webster County Memorial Hospital, where she worked in medical records. Her steady commitment to her work reflected the same faithful spirit she carried into every part of her life.

She found joy in life’s simple and lasting blessings: gardening, reading, and, above all, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those who knew her will remember the warmth she brought to her family, the kindness she extended so naturally, and the gentle happiness that seemed always present in her smile.

She leaves behind a family who will cherish her memory with deep love: her daughters, Tamara Gurkin and Julia Bragg, both of Cowen; her grandchildren, Kevin Bragg of Colorado, Stephany Bragg of Cowen, Heather Gurkin of Newport News, Virginia, and Whitney Gurkin of Virginia; and her great-grandchildren, Olivia Rivera, Chase Youker, Lela Bragg, Parker Bragg, Jaxon Gaidowski, and Julia Gurkin. In their lives, her love and care will continue to be felt for years to come. Josie’s life was marked by devotion to family, dedication to her work, and a spirit of kindness that made others feel welcome and loved. She will be deeply missed and tenderly remembered.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Nellie Hinkle; her sisters, Anna Williams, Carol Flenner, and Sue Spinks; and her brothers, Gary “Doc” Hinkle, Gerald Hinkle, Fred Hinkle, and Carl “Bub” Hinkle.

A private family graveside service will be honored at 1:00 p.m. on September 23, 2026, at WV Memorial Gardens, 146 Little Beaver Road, Calvin, West Virginia 26660 with Pastor Jim Varney officiating.
