Sampson Franklin Woods, a skilled craftsman, passed away unexpectedly on March 13, 2026, in Summersville, West Virginia. Born on April 1, 1957, in Calvin, West Virginia, Sampson lived a life marked by hard work, dedication, and a genuine commitment to helping others.
Sampson's career spanned several professions that showcased his talents and work ethic. He was a coal miner, a demanding occupation that he approached with resolve and pride. Beyond the mines, Sampson was highly skilled in small engine repair, and he possessed exceptional ability in auto body repair and painting. His craftsmanship and attention to detail earned him respect and admiration from those who knew his work.
He was a man of vibrant interests and hobbies. Sampson enjoyed watching DVDs, the quiet pleasures of fishing, as well as engaging in small engine repairs and painting cars—activities that mirrored his lifelong dedication to precision and care.
Those who were fortunate to call Sampson a friend remember him as someone who went out of his way to assist others, embodying kindness and generosity in everyday life. He cherished a close circle of true friends—Tim, Terry, Dave, and Gary—who stood by his side through life's challenges and joys.
Sampson's family was central to his world. He is survived by his daughter Samantha Woods of Grandy, North Carolina, and his sons Sammy Dale Woods, also of Grandy, NC, and Sampson Franklin Woods II of Virginia. He also leaves behind his stepdaughter Shawna Dillard of North Carolina. His siblings include Joe Meadows in Florida, Basil Woods in Louisiana, and Madline Woods in West Virginia. He found joy in his grandchildren Rayann Spruill of Ohio, Brooklyn Ramsey of California, and Andle Ramsey of North Carolina, as well as his great-grandchildren William Spruill and Hazel Spruill. Alongside these close family members, Sampson’s life touched many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who gathered throughout the years.
Sampson was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Margret Woods Myers, and his brother Lonnie Meadows.
