Millard "Butch" Smith Jr., affectionately known as Butch, of Upper Glade, West Virginia, passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 29, 2026, at the age of 65. Born on June 12, 1961, in Richwood, West Virginia, Butch will be remembered as a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend.
Butch was a graduate of Webster County High School. He then followed in his father's footsteps into the coal mines and worked 30 plus years as a miner operator before retiring from Greenbrier Minerals. Butch enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, socializing, yard work and riding his Harley.
Butch was the cherished son of Betty Smith, who survives him, and the late Millard "Junior" Smith. Throughout his life, Butch maintained deep and enduring connections with his family. He is survived by his loving mother Betty; his brother, Mckinley "Kenny" Smith; and his sister, Debra "Debbie" (Dennis) Cowger. His presence will also be missed by his nephews Josh Miller, Jeremy Miller, and Zach Miller, all of whom held him in great affection.
Butch spent his years in the mountains of West Virginia, forging a path marked by kindness and quiet strength. Family was central to Butch's life, and he valued time spent with those closest to him. He will be remembered for his steadfast loyalty, gentle humor, and the lasting impact he had on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Butch’s unexpected passing is a deep loss for his family and the community that knew and respected him. In honoring his memory, his family and friends find solace in the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy built on love, kinship, and the subtly powerful ways he touched the lives around him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Millard "Junior" Smith, whose influence and guidance were always a source of strength in Butch’s life.
As his loved ones grieve, they also celebrate the many moments, great and small, that defined Butch’s life. He will be fondly remembered and forever missed by all those who knew him.
