Michael Jefferson Holbrook, born on January 9, 1964, in Webster Springs, West Virginia, passed away on May 14, 2026, in Morgantown, West Virginia, at the age of 62. After an extended illness, Michael departed this life at WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital, leaving behind a legacy marked by devotion to family, a rich career, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Michael spent many years contributing to the traditional craft of whiskey barrel-making in Kentucky, a testament to his dedication to skilled workmanship and a respect for time-honored practices. Later, he transitioned to working at a paper mill where he was involved in the process of bookmaking. These professional chapters reflect both his commitment to craft and his adaptability.

A native of West Virginia, Michael drew strength and joy from his surroundings. He was an avid rock collector with a keen eye for fossils, always eager to uncover nature’s hidden treasures. His passion for the outdoors extended to camping, woodworking, and photography, hobbies that allowed him to capture the beauty and wonder of the natural world he so cherished. Michael’s favorite moments were often those spent walking in the woods, a peaceful setting where he found solace and inspiration.

Michael Jefferson Holbrook’s life was one of quiet strength, boundless curiosity, and heartfelt connection. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him to appreciate the small wonders of life and to hold close the bonds of family and friendship.

He is survived by his son, Jeffery Allen Holbrook of Williams River, sister, Carol McCourt of Williams River, along with several nieces, nephews, and an extended family and circle of friends who all bear witness to his enduring impact. Michael is preceded in death by his father, Donald Ray Holbrook, and his mother, Delvena McCartney Holbrook, his brothers, Ken Holbrook and Danny Holbrook.

Service will be held at 4:00pm Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Morris Funeral Home, Cowen with Pastor Larry Lovely officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be from 2:00pm until the time-of-service Wednesday at the funeral home.  Michael's wishes for cremation will then be honored.
