Junior Lawrence Cobb

Junior Cobb, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, Navy veteran, educator, and dedicated member of his community, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

He was born on January 24, 1940 in Cowen, WV the son of the late Albert Lawrence Cobb and the late Hazel Hall Cobb. 

Junior proudly served his country as a 20-year United States Navy veteran. He retired as a Commissione Warrant Officer in Norfork, VA in 1977. After his military service, he continued serving others through education and his community. He taught building construction at Webster County High School, where he was able to share his knowledge, skills, and strong work ethic with his students.

His dedication to his community extended far beyond the classroom. Junior served as Mayor of Cowen, was involved with the Cowen Railroad Festival and Cowen Improvement Committee and served a short term on the Board of Education. He was also a member and former Commander of the American Legion Post 62 and a member of the Knights of Pythias. Junior was a member of Glade View Community Church.
Junior lived a life defined by his love for his family, service to his country, hard work, and dedication to the community he called home.
Junior enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his family. Above all, he loved being there for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Junior especially enjoyed watching and supporting his grandchildren in their sports and activities, and the memories they made together will always hold a special place in their hearts.

Junior’s life was one of service, family, and love. He served his country, taught and encouraged young people, worked to better his community, and, most importantly, loved and supported his family. The titles he carried throughout his life—husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, teacher, and friend—were roles he carried with pride.

Junior will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former students, and the Cowen community. While his passing leaves an emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him, the stories, lessons, laughter, and memories he leaves behind will continue to keep his spirit close.

His legacy will live on through the family he loved, the community he served, and the many lives he touched along the way.

Surving are Juniors loving and devoted wife, Unia “Josie” Cobb. Together, they built a life centered around family, love, and their community. He was a proud father to his daughters, Tamara Gurkin of Cowen and Julia “Faith” Bragg and her husband, Leonard Bragg, of Cowen.Junior is also survived by his brother, Troy Cobb, and sister, Ruby Plymale. One of Junior’s greatest joys was being a grandfather. He was a proud grandfather to Kevin Bragg of Colorado, Stephany Bragg of Cowen, Heather Gurkin of Newport News, Virginia, and Whitney Gurkin of Virginia. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Olivia Rivera, Chase Youker, Lela Bragg, Parker Bragg, Jaxon Gaidowski, and Julia Gurkin and many nieces and nephews. rts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Cobb and Hazel Cobb; his brothers, LeRoy Chambers, Wendell Arbogast, Bobby Cobb, Billy Cobb, Johnny Cobb, and Jimmy Cobb; and his sisters, LaWanda Short and Peggy Cobb.

Graveside services will be held at West Virginia Memorial Garden in Calvin, at 1:00 pm on Thursday, September 3, 2026, with full military honors by American Legion Post #105 of Cowen.
