Julia JoAnn Riddle Hughes, a dedicated educator and passionate community member, passed away on June 11, 2026, at Mon General Hospital. Born on July 13, 1947, in Richwood, West Virginia, Julia's life was marked by her unwavering commitment to her family, her community, and her work.
Julia earned a Bachelor’s degree and devoted many years of her career to the Webster County Board of Education. She was well known for her role as the Building Construction "Shop" Teacher at Glade Elementary, where she inspired countless children with her knowledge and enthusiasm. Beyond the classroom, Julia was an extremely hard worker whose dedication extended into every facet of her life.
One of Julia’s proudest accomplishments was starting her own greenhouse business, a venture rooted in her deep connection to farming life. She established a herd of quality Hereford cattle known throughout the state. She was a lifelong member of Webster County Farm Bureau and served on the Webster County Republican Executive Committee. Those who knew her fondly remember how intimately she understood farm life—whether it was horses, cows, dogs, or other animals, Julia’s knowledge and love for the farm remained strong throughout her life. Julia JoAnn Riddle Hughes will be remembered with great respect and affection for her steadfast spirit, her contribution to education, and her enduring love for family and community. Her legacy remains a beacon of hard work, dedication, and heartfelt care that touched many lives.
Julia is survived by her beloved husband, Estil Hughes; brother, Bill Riddle and his wife Sharon of Boggs; son, Jason Bradford Hughes of Boggs; grandchildren, Dustin Hughes and Dalen Hunt; and great-grandchildren Theo, Haley, and Grace Hughes. Her lasting legacy is also carried forward in the hearts of her family and the community she served so diligently.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Elburn Riddle and Myrtle Roberts Riddle, and her brother, Rodney Allen Riddle.
Visitation will be held on June 16, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Morris Funeral Home, located at 160 Railroad Avenue, PO Box 267, Cowen, WV 26206. The funeral service will follow on June 17, 2026, at Morris Funeral at 2:00 PM with Pastor Mark Coffman officiating. Burial will follow at the Hughes Family Cemetery in Camden on Gauley.
