Services will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Morris Funeral Home, Cowen, with Pastor Craig Williams officiating. Burial with full Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post 62 will follow at Hickman Cemetery, Dyer. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 12:00pm until the time of the service Thursday at the Funeral Home.

John William Sawyer, 77, of Williams River, WV passed away on May 3, 2025. He was born on July 29, 1947, in Richwood, WV, the son of the late Walter and Dora Lee Sawyer.
John was a 1966 graduate of Cowen High School. He was a former exterminator in Ohio and West Virginia. John was a former U.M.W.A. coal miner for Sewell Coal Company. John was a Vietnam Veteran having served in the United States Air Force. He was a member of American Legion Post 62. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, joking around, and making people laugh. He especially loved to spend time on Cheat Mountain rabbit hunting.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother-in-law Danny Jackson.
Surviving is his loving wife Barbara, son, Scott Sawyer, daughter in law Pamlynn Sawyer, siblings Walter “Tommy” Sawyer (Carolyn), Janice Jackson, grandchildren Jacob Sawyer and fiancé’ (Anna Fletcher), Emily and (Kyle) Harrelson, Alexandra Sawyer and husband (Colt Knight), Jessica Toothman and (Anthony Dodrill) parents of great grandchildren Avery and Kaiden Dodrill, and aunts, Dixie Schmidt, and Dorothy Ward.
