Homer "Butch" Curtis Junior Mullens, a beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV. Born in Richwood on September 14, 1947, Butch touched the lives of all who knew him with his kindness, unwavering loyalty, and deep commitment to family.
His early years in Richwood shaped the steadfast character and gentle spirit that he would carry throughout his life. The son of the late Junior and Archetta Mullens, he grew up surrounded by love and guided by the values instilled in him by his close-knit family. Butch served in the United States Marine Corp for four proud years, being stationed at Camp Lajune in North Carolina and in the Vietnam War.
Butch's life was marked by dignity, resilience, and an enduring sense of service. He leaves behind a legacy defined not only by his devotion to family, but also by the unspoken acts of kindness and compassion that were the hallmark of his character. He worked for 32 years in the coal mining industry and retired from Brooks Run. Butch was proud to be a cancer survivor. You would often hear him say that everyone needed to "simplify" things.
Butch was an advent outdoorsman. He loved hunting, but in his later years he got his enjoyment from just watching the deer graze from his back porch. Butch was a Christian. He always carried his bible with him which he received from the Craigsville United Methodist Church where he was baptized.
Above all else, Butch treasured his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Burdena Dail Mullens, whose partnership and devotion were the foundation of a life well lived. Together, they raised a loving family and created countless cherished memories. He is remembered as a deeply caring father to his daughters Christina Mullens, Samantha (Grant) Ramsburg, and Shyane (Krycztufor) Miller, and his son, Shannon Mullens. His love for each of his children was unconditional and steadfast—a source of strength for the entire family.
He was a doting grandfather to Paisley, Samuel, Blake, Nathan, Mason, Sky, McKenna, MaKayla, Gavin, Sawyer, Tytan and Benjamin, whose lives were brightened by his warmth and wisdom. Butch’s guidance and laughter will forever be treasured by his grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also lovingly remembered by his stepsister, Elaine Dillon, and many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, as well as his cousin, Danny Mullens, which was like a brother to him.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jason Mullens, whose memory was held dear in Homer's heart. He was also predeceased by his parents, Junior and Archetta Mullens, and by his stepbrother, Stanley Mullens.
Butch’s life was marked by dignity, resilience, and an enduring sense of service. He leaves behind a legacy defined not only by his devotion to family, but also by the unspoken acts of kindness and compassion that were the hallmark of his character. He was always the first to help anyone in need.
