Harold Leon Sholes, affectionately known as "Butch," passed away peacefully on Monday, April 27, 2026, at the Summersville Health Care Center in Summersville, West Virginia. Born on August 6, 1942, in Tioga, West Virginia, Harold lived a life marked by dedication, hard work, and deep commitment to his family and community.
A 1959 graduate of Richwood High School, Harold distinguished himself early on through his unwavering work ethic. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy, exemplifying his sense of duty and honor.
Following his military service, Harold devoted over three decades to working as a coal miner under the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) for several companies, including Island Creek Coal Company, Sewell Coal, and Consol Coal. His tenure as a coal miner was not only a career but a testament to his resilience and steadfastness. A 50-year member of the UMWA, Harold’s dedication extended beyond the workplace into the brotherhood of mining comrades. He was also a valued member of American Legion Post #62 in Cowen, further reflecting his lifelong commitment to service.
Harold was known among friends and family as a provider who worked tirelessly to support those he loved. His passions outside of work were rooted deeply in the rich traditions of West Virginia. He found joy in hunting, was an avid listener of Bluegrass music, and took great pride in cheering for West Virginia University sports teams. A dedicated NASCAR fan, Harold especially enjoyed rooting for Dale Jr. and Chase Elliott, sharing these moments with friends and family alike.
He is survived by his beloved spouse, Frances Hickman Sholes; their son, Phillip Sholes of Craigsville, West Virginia; and his daughter-in-law, Charlotte Sholes of Craigsville. Harold’s family circle also includes his brother, John Sholes of Francisville, Indiana, and his sister, Barbara Dodrill of Craigsville, as well as many extended family members, mining brothers, and friends who held him in high esteem.
Harold was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Earl Sholes; mother, Irene O’Quinn Sholes; son, Cecil Sholes; brothers Eugene "Donie" Sholes, HD "Tom" Sholes, and Kenneth Sholes; and sisters Libby Hayhurst and Elnora Morgan.
Harold Leon Sholes will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude for his lifetime of service, his love of family, and his enduring spirit.
Service will be held at 2:00pm. Friday, May 1, 2026, at Morris Funeral Home, Cowen with Rev. Keith Williams officiating. Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post # 62 will follow service at the funeral home. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 12:00pm until the time-of-service Friday at the funeral home.
