Doy Jennings Short

Doy Jennings Short, known to all as a dedicated family man and hard worker, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2026, at Webster Healthcare in Cowen after an extended illness. Born on July 3, 1930, in Coe, West Virginia, Doy’s life spanned 96 years filled with commitment, perseverance, and deep-rooted faith.

Doy began his working life in the coal mines, where he spent 17 years steadfastly laboring—a testament to his resilience and strength. Seeking new opportunities, Doy eventually moved to Detroit, Michigan, and built a long and respected career with General Motors, working there for over 25 years. His dedication in both the mining and automotive industries was well recognized by his peers and earned him membership in the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) as well as the United Auto Workers of America (UAW).

Faith was a guiding force in Doy’s life. He was a valued member of the Freewill Baptist Church, drawing strength and comfort from his congregation. His community involvement and the relationships he nurtured within these organizations reflected his steadfast character and caring nature.

Doy is survived by his loving daughter, Rosalie Giles; his devoted son, Richard (Pat) Short; and his cherished sister, Eva Rexrode, 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. The bonds shared with his family were central to Doy’s life, and he took great pride in their accomplishments and happiness.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 75 years, Frankie Short; his son, Larry Short; his brothers, Junior Short and Orean Mullens; and one great-grandchild. The memory of these loved ones remained ever-present in Doy’s heart throughout his days.
