Daniel Nolan Bean

Daniel Nolan Bean, 79, of Cowen passed away peacefully on Monday, August 9, 2021, at his home with his two daughters by his side. He was born October 8, 1941, to Carl and Maude (Casto) Bean of Erbacon. Dan was the fifth of ten children and the third of six boys.

Growing up on the farm in Erbacon with his nine siblings, mother, and his father often away working in the mines, Dan learned the value of hard work, the love of family, music, and an appreciation for the outdoors. He loved exploring the mountainside, hunting, fishing, playing his guitar, and reading. Dan often shared stories with his daughters about the farm horse, Dave, the farm dogs, and adventures with his siblings.

Dan graduated from Cowen High School in 1960, obtained his Bachelor of Arts from Morris Harvey College in 1964, and his Master of Arts from West Virginia University in 1968. He started teaching Biology at Webster Springs High School from 1964 – 1968 while working on his Masters, then transitioned to role of Principal of Cowen High School from 1968 – 1974, which consolidated with Webster Springs High School to become Webster County High School, where he remained Principal until his retirement in 1997.

Dan was very creative and enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including playing musical instruments such as the guitar, piano, violin, banjo, and mandolin; writing poems about life experiences and his loved ones; woodworking and engraving; growing apple trees and grape vines in the orchard above the house; fishing, camping and hunting.

Dan is survived by his daughter Jennifer Hunter and fiancée Eric Charsky of San Antonio, Texas; daughter Sarah Bean-Caudill of Bluefield, West Virginia; grandson Luke Hunter of San Antonio, Texas and granddaughter Elaina Caudill of Bluefield, West Virginia. Siblings include Charlotte Downey of Cabin Creek, West Virginia, Eddie (Kim) Bean of Cedar Lakes, Indiana, Carlene Wright of Poca, West Virginia, and Madolyn (Ellie) Candelaria of Castia, California and many other extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, wife, Linda Joyce Bean to whom he was married 56 years, brothers, Lehr, Carl Jr., Lawrence (Kimmy), Tommy, and his sister Helen preceded him death.

Services will be held at 4:00pm, Friday, August 13, 2021, at Morris Funeral Home, Cowen, with Pastor Linda Dyer officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00pm until the time of service Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at 1:00pm Saturday, August 14, 2021, at West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Cowen Public Library 47 Mill Street Cowen, WV 26206 or to the Alzheimer’s Association 1601 2nd Ave. Charleston, WV 25387
