Arletta Kay Mathes

Arletta Kay Mathes, a devoted mother, veteran, and dedicated professional, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026, at the age of 78 in Beaver, West Virginia. Born on February 12, 1948, in Glade View, West Virginia, Arletta was a lifelong resident of the area and a cherished member of her community.

A proud 1966 graduate of Cowen High School, Arletta's commitment to service was evident early in her life. She honorably served her country as a member of the United States Air Force, reflecting her strong sense of duty and patriotism. Following her military service, Arletta devoted 45 years of her career as an accounting auditor for the state of West Virginia, where she was known for her dedication, professionalism, and keen attention to detail.

Arletta, born Arletta Kay Williams, was known for her kindness and willingness to help others. She loved spending time with her family, cherishing the moments they shared together. Her hobbies included farming, gardening, canning, attending to her flowers, crocheting, sewing, and pottery—passions that enriched her life and brought joy to those around her.

She is survived by her son, Kalenn Kawika (Lisa) Nemoto of Summersville, and her daughter, Sara Emily Mathes (Brian Griffith) of Beckley. Arletta’s loving spirit is also carried on by her sister Frankie (Mike) Hoover of Summersville, and her sister Helen Cunningham of Nettie, as well as by her grandchildren: Jaden M. (Tanner) Huffman of Summersville, Korey E. Nemoto of Summersville, Gabriel H. Griffith of Charleston, and Laiken E. Griffith of Nashville, Tennessee. Additionally, she was a proud great-grandmother to Kalia J. Huffman. Arletta's extended family includes her brother-in-law Bill Gadd, many nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends who hold her memory dear.

She was preceded in death by her beloved spouse, Bernard William Mathes; her parents, Snowden Anderson Williams and Dora Frances Williams; her sister Barbara Gadd; and her brother-in-law James Cunningham.

Arletta Kay Mathes, life, was one defined by devotion—to her family, her career, and her country. Her gentle nature, steadfast commitment, and generous heart made a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love, service, and kindness will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
