Amos Hill "Sonny" Bird, Jr. departed this life at his home after an extended illness on May 28, 2026, at the age of 74 years old. Sonny was born in Richwood, WV on July 23, 1951, to the late Amos and Goldia Moore Bird.
Sonny married Joy L. Crowe Bird on April 1, 1978. They had two children Sonja (Rick) Cool of Summersville and John (Susan) Bird of Craigsville whom he loved dearly. He was known as "Poppy" to his grandbabies, Hannah and Garrett Cool who were his pride and joy. He was at his best when he was with them and leaving a lasting impact and wonderful memories to last a lifetime.
Sonny loved the game of baseball. He devoted 28 years (1988-2016) of coaching and umpiring kids of all ages including his own and his grandbabies in Webster and Nicholas Counties. Webster County Little League was chartered in 1988 and two years later, in 1990, Sonny, along with a few others, chartered Cowen Little League. Sonny obtained the Cowen Little League field from the Moore Family and was very proud of this accomplishment. Cowen Little League continues to thrive to this day.
Sonny served on the Board of Directors for Little League, was a Board Member for District 8, Umpire in Chief for several years and a Hall of Fame member of Cowen Little League. Sonny coached the Glade Bulldog football and basketball teams; Webster County Highlander football and baseball teams and American Legion Baseball teams.
Sonny worked at Carper Parts in the early 70's; Iron Factory in Grafton, Ohio; was a coal miner; and line construction worker. Sonny was an avid hunter and fisherman. His happiest days were at his camp down Elk River, spring trout fishing with his family. He also loved camping, cat fishing, swimming, riding 4-wheelers, and telling stories. He will be missed by all. Sonny was a Christian by faith and is reunited with his parents and Heavenly Father.
Sonny is survived by his sisters, Patty Wright of Cowen and Linda (Donald) Carpenter of Damascus, Maryland.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Joy of 52 years, married 47 years, his children and his grandbabies along with many extended family and friends.
The family wants to express a special "Thank You" to his caregivers; Lorie Ryder, Amanda and Sam Riffle, and Michelle Farris. They, along with the family provided the best of care.
