William J. “Billy Joe” Mathes, 69, of Cowen, WV passed away from cancer, Sunday, September 11, 2016, at his home.
He was born and raised in Cowen, WV a son of Denver and Jean (Pugh) Mathes, whom preceded him in death. He moved to Cleveland, Ohio after graduating from Cowen High School, where he worked for 17 years at Republic/ LTV Steel. He and his family returned to WV in 1987 after Billy Joe became disabled.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He and his wife, Sharon, briefly owned a country store in Erbacon, WV. The friends he made there held a special place in his heart. He proved to be invaluable in helping his son-in-law build a logging business 17 years ago. His past 6 years have been spent battling several illnesses that took their toll on his body, but after just 45 short days of his cancer diagnosis, he was unable to fight anymore.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sharon Beale Mathes. Daughters, Kimberly Steele and Patricia (Raymond) Short of Cowen, WV. Grandson Jonathan Feagans , whom he raised, Granddaughters, AshLea Mathes, KasSandra Jarvis, Katie and Jessi Short, Great Grandson Colden James. Siblings: Jim (Carol) Mathes of Cowen, Linda (Bob) Hamilton of Alburn Corner, Allen (Marsha) Mathes of Ravana, Oh, Barbara (Ralph) Nolan of Cowen, Charles Mathes of Cowen, Carol (Richard) Rowan of Cowen, Martha (Larry) Armentrout of Cowen, and several nieces and nephews.
