Burial Date August 29, 2021

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Morris Funeral Home in Cowen, WV with the Rev. Arnold Nicholas officiating. Friends may call two hours prior to the service. Burial will be at Walker Memorial Park in Summerville, WV.

Per Roger’s request, family and friends are invited to a memorial potluck dinner in his honor afterwards.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made either to the Roger’s Final Days GoFundMe or to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

Roger Dean Hamrick of Calvin, WV formerly of Drennen departed this life  Friday, August 20, 2021 at home after a short battle with cancer. Born March 27, 1960 in Batavia, New York, he was the son of the late Darrell E and Ruth Ann Bennett Hamrick.

He was a1979 graduate of Nicholas County High School. He worked for ACM, Clay and Webster Trucking for nearly 20 years until he became permanently disabled in 2017. Prior to that he had worked at Carroll Shoe Company in Summerville, Seismograph Corporation of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mirk Inc. in Smithville, OH, Lake Dorsey Construction and Mike Amick Construction of Nettie and Summersville. and was once owner and operator of Roger’s Grocery and Game Room at Zela.  Roger loved to hunt and fish and work in his garden. In recent years he and Paula enjoyed traveling and collecting antique and vintage items. Some of his best memories were of taking his kids, nieces, and nephews camping when they were little. He spent many hours chopping firewood and cutting sticks to roast marshmallows. New Year’s Eve at Uncle Roger’s and Aunt Paula’s house became a family tradition over 30 years ago when their own kids and the neices and nephews came to ring in the New Year. Today, the next generation of kids continue that tradition.  Roger accepted Jesus Christ as his savior in May of this year. He was a Baptist by faith and often drifted off to sleep with his Bible beside his pillow.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Nathan Hamrick, Grandmother Maggie Hamrick, sister’s Betty Lou Smith and Linda Plueckhahn, and Brother Eugene Smith.

Those left to cherish his memory include the girl he promised “forever and always” on November 22, 1981, the love of his life, Paula Sue Pierson Hamrick of Calvin. His daughter Tiffany (Bryan) McCourt of Cowen and his son Jeffrey Hamrick of Calvin. Sisters, Charlene (Curt) O’Neal of Mount Lookout, Tracey Hamrick of Hookersville, Pam (David) Johnson of Poe, and Faye Smith of Albion, New York. Brother Edward (Peggy) of Drennen and second mother Betty Hamrick of Hookersville. Granddaughters, Hailey Johnson, Madi Johnson, Linsey Johnson, and  Malary (Josh) Hollandsworth all of Cowen, Chloe Stewart of Drennen. Grandsons, Scott and Taylor McCourt and coming soon Nathaniel (Tate) McCourt all of Cowen, Cason Pennington of Drennen. Great grandson Easton Hollandsworth of Cowen. Several nieces and nephews.
