Mary Virginia Fletcher, 96, died December 14, 2017 at Clay Health Center, Big Otter, WV.

Mary Virginia (Ginnie) was born March 23, 1921 to Ernest and Rose (Frame) Anderson in Clay County and spent her early years on the family farm. She attended high school at Widen and Montgomery where she met and later married Harry Fletcher. They later lived in Richwood, WV and Camden-on-Gauley, WV and began their family of two sons and a daughter. Harry was employed by Richwood Sewell Coal Mine until his death in a mining accident in 1958. After her husband’s death, Mary moved to Charleston, WV in 1962 to be near her siblings. She attended a Licensed Practical Nursing program in 1964 and worked at Charleston General Hospital for the following ten years as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She continued to live in her home independently until at the age of 89 she entered an assisted living facility and later resided at Clay Health Care Center, Ivydale, WV.

Mary was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker; she enjoyed gardening—both vegetable and flowers; she worked diligently growing and preserving vegetables and proudly produced a storage cellar of numerous rows of canned vegetables and fruits. She enjoyed cooking and baking; her German Chocolate cake was often a highlight at family reunions. She strived to fix everyone’s favorite foods when we came for a home cooked meal—from fried green tomatoes and tomato dumplings to coconut cream pie and tapioca pudding. Mary’s favorite entertainment was shopping-particularly for shoes; she loved vacationing in Gatlinburg, Myrtle Beach and traveled often with a senior tour group to numerous places throughout the U.S. –all these excursions included shopping at unique shops, road side vendors, antique dealers and vegetable stands.

Mom was an example to us of perseverance, dedication and hard work. She delighted in the accomplishments and joys of her children. Mary is survived by her two sons, Harry Keith and wife, Joyce, of Summersville, WV; Johnny Neal and wife Esta, of Falling Rock, WV and daughter, Janet Lynn Fletcher-Rich, and husband, John Rich, of Butte, MT. Grandchildren include: Harry Keith Fletcher, Jr., Hamilton Kirk Fletcher, Howard Kevin Fletcher, wife Sarah, Hollisa Kimberly Legg, husband Todd all of the Charleston area and Jonathan Crummett of Sendai, Japan and Katelyn Hoffman, husband Tom of Butte, MT. Great grandchildren include: Erika, Kasidi, Hamilton, Kory, Karsen, Maysen, Isaac and Molly.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five brothers and three sisters.
