James Wilford “JB” Barnett, 73, of Cowen, passed away Monday, January 9, 2023 at his residence after a short illness. He was born August 29, 1949 in Sutton a son of the late Wilford C. and Violet Macel Brown Barnett.

James was a United States Navy Veteran, having earned the United States Forces “Bronze Star” during the Vietnam War. He then returned home and went to work in the coal mines having worked the next 20 years at Sewell Coal and finishing his mining career up at Brooks Run Coal Company. He then drove truck for many years until his retirement. James never met a stranger, a good story and a shot of Jack Daniels to get the evening started. He frequented Dizzy Dames Saloon, D’s Lounge, and the Star Bar just to name a few. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting, fishing.

Surviving are his sons, Jamie (Michelle) Barnett of Elkins and Christopher Barnett (Caitlin Shay) of Louisville, Kentucky, sister, Penny (Richard) Eplin of St. Louis, grandchildren, Makayla Amos, Macy Amos, Morgan Barnett, Evan Barnett, best friend, Sammy Donaldson and the many friends he’s made over the years will be saddened by his passing.

In addition to his parents, wife, Karen Barnett, sister, Janice Barnett, brothers, Charles Barnett, Kenneth Barnett, Thomas Barnett and David Barnett preceded him in death.

Service will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, January 12, 2023 at Morris Funeral Home, Cowen with Pastor Doug Martin officiating. Burial with full Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post # 62 will follow at the Gospel Fellowship Church Cemetery, Upper Glade. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1:00 until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
