In Keeping with Burton’s wishes he chose to be cremated with a private family service officiated by Rev. Bob Bonderaunt along with special tributes by the VFW post #8614 and the Masonic Lodge # 107.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in memory of Burton to construct a memorial in his honor at the New River Gorge. Those may be sent to Christopher Carpenter, PO Box 993 Cowen WV 26206 or thru PayPal to burtonervinmemorial@gmail.com.

Burton O. Ervin, 82, of Cowen went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at West Virginia University Ruby Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born May 7, 1935 in Cowen a son of the late Earl and Zella Ervin. Burton retired with over 46 years of service from various coal companies – primarily Pittston Coal Company and Island Creek Coal Company.

Surviving are his loving wife of 61 years, Mildred Hammons Ervin, children, Elizabeth Snyder, Wm. David(Denise) Ervin, Diane Carpenter and fiancé George Jarvis, sisters, Carol Cogar of Cowen, Carolyn (Johnny) Meadows of Cowen, grandchildren, Leslie (Mitch) Lester, Jeremy (Whitney) Snyder, Christopher (Karissa) Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, Brandon (Brittany) Carpenter, John Mouser and Paul (Nicole) Mouser, great-grandchildren, Nicholas Lester, Breelynn Lester, Gabriel Snyder, Isaac Snyder, Harleigh Cooper, Asha Snyder, Nathan Mays, Emmalyn Snyder and Tyson Mouser and his loyal dog, Lilly. He also leaves behind many other friends and relatives.

In addition to his parents, Burton was predeceased by his beloved son-in-law, Ed Snyder, brother, Jackie Ervin, and brother in law, Cleo Cogar. He was also predeceased by his special aunt and uncle who were a large and influential part of his live, Porter and Marie King.

He was U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. While in Korea, he performed covert operations with both the Air Force and the Marines. He was very much a proud American. He loved his country and was a shining example of a true Patriot. Burton was a member of V.F.W post #8614. He was member of Masonic Lodge # 107. He was a Master Mason and was very proud that his grandsons Jeremy and Chris, as well as, a grandson-in-law, Mitch, are also Master Masons. He had a strong and abiding Christian Faith. He was a member of the Upper Glade

Presbyterian Church. He was a caring and selfless person who loved his family with all his heart. He was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He had a special place in his heart for his many employees (his children).Burton enjoyed studying history and reading his Bible and discussing politics. He met many political dignitaries in his lifetime. The person he was most proud to meet was President George W. Bush.

He was credited with being the first person to parachute off the New River Gorge Bridge. Two years after Burton’s historic jump in 1979, the first organized Bridge Day took place.
