Our precious mother and grandmother, Betty Jean (Carpenter) Lewis, 91, was welcomed into God’s Holy Kingdom 04/02/2019 to be reunited with her parents, John Morgan McGlaughlin “Doc” and Hallie Effie (Wilson) Carpenter, her infant sister Vada Mae Carpenter, her sister and brother-in-law Kathleen and Arthur Berry, her brothers James Edward Carpenter and Harold Daniel “Bato” Carpenter. Our mother was born 09-15-1927 in Erbacon, WV.

Mother’s survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Stephen Charles and Kathryn Willis of Livingston, Texas, her daughter and son-in-law Susan Lynn (Willis) and Robert Chericalo of Cowen, WV, her granddaughter and husband Sarah Anne (Willis) and Daniel Moreno of Grand Blanc, MI and her grandson Robert Andrew Myers of Cowen, WV.  Additionally, mother is survived by our aunts Helen Carpenter of Smithville, OH and Gwendolyn Carpenter of Cowen, WV.

Our mother’s proudest accomplishment was serving the community of Erbacon as postmaster. She achieved her goal of 50 years of service in December 2013. She retired in January of 2014. Our mother also taught school at Missouri Run, White Oak and Waineville in the 1950’s.

Our mother was a member of the Trinity Covenant Church in Erbacon, WV and was a member of the Camden-on-Gauley, WV chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Our mother was a source of inspiration to her children for being a single parent before being a single parent was the norm. She strived to leave a legacy of hard work and accomplishments her children and grandchildren would be proud of. We couldn’t be more proud of the legacy she left for us. Rest in peace Mother, you have made us proud.

In accordance with our mother’s wishes, she will be cremated and her remains will be buried at a later date in the Carpenter Family Cemetery in Erbacon, WV. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the Trinity Covenant Church at Erbacon, WV.
